Which occupations will be removed from the Skilled Occupation List 2014-2015?
As a guide, the Australian Workforce and Productivity Agency has published the list of occupations “which were borderline in terms of their inclusion on the SOL”. This list includes professional accountants, actuaries, engineers (various specialisations) and dental allied health professional such as Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists.
AWPA advises that “these occupations may be removed in future years subject to monitoring of the labour market, education and migration data and evidence from stakeholders in relation to future oversupply issues, migration outcomes and areas of specific need.”

UPDATE: No occupations are being removed from the Skilled Occupation List
AWPA advises that “these occupations may be removed in future years subject to monitoring of the labour market, education and migration data and evidence from stakeholders in relation to future oversupply issues, migration outcomes and areas of specific need.”
Occupations may also be added to the new Skilled Occupation List (SOL).
If you are concerned that your occupation may be removed from the SOL, you may need to lodge before July 1. Submit an online enquiry and a migration adviser will contact you to discuss how we can help.
Changes to SkillSelect
There will be changes to SkillSelect starting 1 July 2014. This includes the reset of occupational ceilings.
For example, ICT Business and Systems Analysts are currently being issued on a pro-rata basis. If the occupation stays on the SOL, the occupational ceilings will reset meaning more invitations can be issued.
Invitations are issued based on date of effect and points score.
Any changes to 457 Visas – Temporary Work Visas?
It is likely that the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold currently set at A$53,900 will increase. This will affect all 457 visa applications not yet decided after 1 July 2014.
The 457 Review Panel is also expected to release its report around July 2014. The review panel is examining the integrity of the 457 visa program including legislation such as Migration Legislation Amendment (Worker Protection Act) 2008, the Migration Amendment (Temporary Sponsored Visas) Act 2013, and changes to the Migration Regulations 1994.
Visa Application Charges
The Department of Immigration and Border Protection may increase Visa Application Charges from 1 July 2014.
State Sponsored Migration – State Sponsorships
It is envisaged that sponsorships for migration under Subclass 190 and Subclass 489 will re-open for many States and Territories on or soon after 1 July 2014.
State sponsored migration is a viable pathway to Permanent Residency in Australia as it offers bonus points and other concessions.
As there are limited spots, state sponsorships are in high demand. Securing a positive state sponsorship can take several months and many visa criteria will have to be satisfied.
Act now to ensure you have the best chance of success when applications open.
What should I do before 1 July 2014?
You should assess what visa options are available to you and ensure you prepare all necessary requirements so you can lodge an application at the earliest possible time.
You can submit an online enquiry to discuss how we can help you.
