As of 17 April 2019, the Australian Government has introduced a new Subclass 870 Temporary Sponsored Parent Visa. The visa allows parents of Australian permanent residents and citizens to come to Australia for long-term stays for a selected 3 or 5 years. The visa can be renewed to allow a stay of a maximum of 10 years.
Why another parent visa?
Significant processing times and hefty visa application charges have made it difficult for parents and grandparents to reunite with their loved ones in Australia for a long time.
For example, the Permanent Parent Visa is experiencing processing times of approximately 25 years. The faster option, the Contributory Parent Visa, still takes 2-3 years to process and has a government filing fee of $47,455.
The new Subclass 870 Temporary Parent Visa will allow parents and grandparents to come to Australia for 3 or 5 years at a time. While the visa does not lead to permanent residence, the longer terms for stay will significantly benefit parents who can only previously obtain a maximum 12 month validity visitor visa.
What is the criteria for the Subclass 870 Temporary Parent Visa?
There are two stages:
- Sponsorship Application by the child or child-in-law who is an eligible NZ citizen, or holds an Australian PR visa or Australian citizenship. The child must have been usually resident in Australia for 4 years and meet the Income Test requirement.
- Visa Application by the parent once the Sponsorship Application has been approved by the Department of Home Affairs
